President Museveni has reaffirmed government’s commitment to sports infrastructure development following Uganda’s successful bid to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The president, alongside First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni, inspected ongoing construction works at Hoima Stadium during their tour in Bunyoro.
In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Museveni revealed that the government initially planned to develop Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira for historical reasons.
However, the selection of Hoima as the preferred site was influenced by the presence of an airport, which is already under development, ensuring better accessibility for teams and fans during the tournament.
“I would like to congratulate the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements that will boost the local economy,” President Museveni stated.
He also urged the private sector to complement government efforts by investing in hotels and other amenities to accommodate the expected influx of visitors.
The development of Hoima Stadium marks a crucial milestone in Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027, which the country will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania.
The project is expected to create job opportunities, enhance tourism, and improve sports facilities for local athletes.
