Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa has issued a stern warning to Paul Mwesigwa, the Managing Director of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), demanding a smooth transition from Umeme’s operations or risk termination.
Nankabirwa emphasized that Mwesigwa has only two years to prove his capability by delivering a stable power supply and improved service delivery.
"I caution my staff to perform better, and I'm not obligated to renew their contracts," Nankabirwa
She stressed that all UEDCL employees are on contract and can be dismissed at any time under the Human Resource manual.
However, Bukimbiri County MP Eddie Kwizera pushed back against Nankabirwa’s position, arguing that job security is essential for all UEDCL workers.
"There must be job security for all employees under UEDCL," he said.
The transition comes as Umeme’s 20-year concession ends on March 31, 2025, with UEDCL assuming full control of electricity distribution.
The Minister assured Ugandans that the changeover would not disrupt electricity services.
"This is a major step in our journey toward achieving universal electricity access. We are committed to ensuring a seamless transition that guarantees uninterrupted supply and improved service quality," Nankabirwa said.
UEDCL has set ambitious targets, aiming to expand electricity access to 80% of the population within three years and achieve universal coverage by 2030.
As the transition unfolds, Nankabirwa’s warning underscores the pressure on UEDCL to meet public expectations.
With the nation closely monitoring the process, Mwesigwa and his team face mounting pressure to deliver on their mandate.
