With just 14 days left to the deadline for wealth declaration, only 25 percent of public officials in Moroto have submitted their declarations, raising concerns about compliance.
During a meeting with district officials, Deputy Inspector General of Government (IGG) Patricia Ochan Olivia emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, warning of consequences for non-compliance.
“Wealth declaration is a key pillar in fighting corruption. Every public official must comply, and failure to do so or submitting false information will attract serious penalties,” she stated.
The Deputy IGG led a team from the Inspectorate of Government (IG) on a field visit, which began at the office of the Moroto Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) before proceeding to the Moroto District Chamber Hall, where she met district officials.
The team also visited the Town Clerk and Mayor’s office, inspected ongoing road works, and concluded their tour at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital.
Moroto District Chairperson, David Koryang, expressed confidence that officials would meet the deadline, citing past success in compliance.
“Moroto has performed well in previous wealth declaration exercises, and I am optimistic that our officials will meet the target this time as well,” he assured.
However, Moroto Chief Administrative Officer Kassim Kutosi Nasibu highlighted some challenges affecting compliance, including limited access to technology.
“Some leaders are struggling to file their declarations due to a lack of emails or technological skills. There is a need for more training to bridge this gap,” he explained.
To support public officials, Comboni Oyet, the Regional Inspectorate of Government officer, encouraged them to seek assistance from the IG’s office in Moroto.
“Our office is open to help any official experiencing difficulties in submitting their declarations. We urge everyone to come forward before the deadline,” he said.
Meanwhile, Magexi Joram, Director of the Leadership Code at the IG, urged leaders to submit their declarations on time to avoid last-minute delays.
“Procrastination often leads to avoidable challenges. I urge all officials to complete their declarations as soon as possible,” he advised.
At the national level, approximately 40 percent of public officials have already declared their wealth. After concluding their mission in Moroto, the IG team is set to continue the exercise in Kotido District.
