A heavy storm has ravaged several villages in Kyotera District, destroying homes, farmlands, and infrastructure.

The affected areas include Nakasoga, Byangiri, and Byerima in Nabigasa and Kirumba sub-counties, where strong winds uprooted crops and left dozens of families without shelter.

Farmers who had been hoping for rain to save their drying crops—especially coffee—are now counting losses after the storm wiped out what remained of their fields.

“We always pray for rain, but this time, it has not treated us well. The coffee plants that survived the drought have now been shattered,” said Teopisita Nakatudde, a resident.

The violent winds uprooted banana plantations and coffee fields, worsening the hardships caused by the prolonged dry season.

Beyond the farms, over 44 houses were completely destroyed, leaving many families stranded.

“We have nowhere to go or restart from because all our houses are gone. We are stranded,” said Swaibu Mugera, a resident of Nakasoga.

Many affected families are now appealing to the government—particularly the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness—for urgent relief, including food and building materials.

Yasin Ssekalaara, whose house was completely destroyed, said he and his children have been sleeping outside with no shelter.

“I am pleading with Prime Minister Nabbanja to help us, just like she has helped others before. We need urgent assistance,” he said.

Local leaders have also urged the government and humanitarian organizations to step in with emergency relief.

With dozens of families displaced and food supplies destroyed, residents fear that hunger and further suffering will worsen if help does not arrive soon. Authorities are yet to assess the full extent of the damage, but the calls for intervention are growing.
