NWSC's Mugisha Commissions Shs20bn Self-Financed Water Plant in Kalungu

The project, fully financed by NWSC through market funding, features a 4,000,000-litre-per-day water treatment plant designed to meet the region's growing demand.

KALUNGU – The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing Director, Eng. Silver Mugisha, has commissioned a Shs20 billion water supply project in Kalungu, providing relief to residents long affected by water shortages.

The project, fully financed by NWSC through market funding, features a 4,000,000-litre-per-day water treatment plant designed to meet the region's growing demand.

The facility will serve Kalungu, Kyamulibwa, Bugomola, Lusango, Luvule, Kamuli, Lugasa, and neighbouring areas.

Mugisha highlighted NWSC’s “do-it-yourself” approach, which allowed the corporation to design the infrastructure in-house, reducing both costs and implementation time.

“With the works at the Water Treatment Plant complete and currently under the Defects Liability Period, focus has now been shifted to ensuring that water is extended, and connections to the customers are expedited,” he said.

The project includes a raw water intake on the Katonga River, with a capacity of 4,500 cubic metres per day, a four-kilometre raw water pipeline, and a treatment plant equipped with aerators, coagulators, clarifiers, and rapid sand filters.

A 1,500-cubic-metre main reservoir on Sala Hill, a 100-cubic-metre secondary reservoir, 6.6 kilometres of treated water pipeline, and 20 kilometres of distribution mains have also been constructed.

Senior Director P&CD Eng. Paddy Twesigye and Director Infrastructure Planning & Development Eng. Denis Taremwa led a tour of the facility, explaining how NWSC’s internal capacity for project design and supervision resulted in significant savings.

The project was executed by MS Zhonghao Overseas Construction & Engineering Co. Ltd in partnership with GETS Technical Services Ltd.

Officials say the new infrastructure will eliminate long-standing water supply challenges and support socio-economic development in Kalungu.
