Becky’s Child Foundation has called for a collective and committed effort to protect and empower girls through gender-responsive policies, affirmative action, and the creation of economic and educational opportunities.

The call was made at the Mustard Seed SS Busota Girls Empowerment outreach, where Rebecca Alitwala Mubezi, CEO of the foundation, sent a message urging stronger inclusion, rights, and voices for girls.

In her message delivered by girls' activist and volunteer Monica Mukyala, Mubezi stressed the importance of translating gender equality policies into action, particularly in promoting girls’ participation in leadership and protecting them from gender-based violence, abuse, and exploitation.

“We need to walk the talk of affirmative action by ensuring girls are included, engaged, and heard in all spaces,” Mubezi said.

Moses Mitala, Kamuli Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, challenged women and girls to claim their spaces and amplify their voices.

He emphasized that issues such as early marriages, defilement, and school dropouts can best be addressed through skill development, which is vital in breaking intergenerational poverty.

Mitala lauded Becky’s Child Foundation for its efforts in offering counseling, skilling, and empowerment programs to enhance girls’ potential and life skills.

Students attending the outreach also voiced their concerns, particularly about the critical issue of menstrual hygiene management.

Hasfa Ademun, a student, called on the government to provide free sanitary pads to schools, likening it to the free distribution of condoms.

"If they can give free condoms, why not free pads?" she asked, pointing out that the lack of proper menstrual care directly impacts school attendance and contributes to high dropout rates among girls.

Becky’s Child Foundation continues to play a pivotal role in advocating for the rights and well-being of girls, with a clear focus on skilling and empowering them for brighter futures.
