Handcuffed Suspect Escapes from Mukono Police Custody

Police in Mukono are searching for Isa Olenge, also known as Ali Gandi, a suspect linked to a notorious gang terrorizing residents in Goma Division.

Olenge, a resident of Nabusugwe in Mukono Municipality, escaped from police custody while receiving medical treatment at CPR Medical Center, located across from the Mukono Division Police Station.

Olenge is wanted in connection with multiple criminal activities, including assault, and is part of a gang that has been causing havoc in areas such as Misindye, Namyoya, and Sonde.

Police had previously raided these areas last month in an operation to apprehend members of the group, during which Olenge was shot in the left leg while allegedly attempting to disarm officers.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the escape, saying, “On the 28th of last month, police conducted a raid in Jinja Misindye and Nabusugwe areas to crack down on criminals troubling Mukono.

Several suspects were arrested, including Khata Paul and Katongole Alex.”

He added, “Olenge was shot in the left leg during the operation while trying to forcefully disarm police officers.”

Following the raid, Olenge was taken to Mukono Police Station and later transferred to Mulago Hospital for treatment. After a few days, he was brought back to Mukono custody.

“He later requested to be taken to the hospital because he was still experiencing pain in his knee. He was taken to CPR Medical Center while still in handcuffs,” Onyango said.

It was at CPR Medical Center that Olenge managed to escape, despite being handcuffed. Onyango urged the public to assist in locating the fugitive.

“Police are searching for his whereabouts, and we ask anyone who may have seen him to report to the authorities,” he said.

Olenge remains on the run, facing charges including assault and robbery. Police have intensified efforts to track him down, warning that he poses a significant threat to public safety.
