The Muslim community and leaders in Arua have hailed the late Haruna Adam Emaga, former Arua Member of Parliament, as an exemplary leader whose legacy should be followed.

Haruna, who served in the National Resistance Council in the 1980s, passed away yesterday evening following complications from depression and fractures, according to his family.

Abdallatif Atiku, a relative of the deceased, confirmed that Haruna had been battling depression since 2022 and had been receiving medical care.

"It reached a point when he was overthinking, experienced headaches, and lost sleep," Atiku shared.

Born on 8th April 1942, Haruna had a distinguished career, including roles as Secretary in Greater Arua, Accountant at the Lint Marketing Board, Manager at Uganda General Motors, and a farmer of cash crops.

Former Arua Municipality Mayor, Charles Asiki, described him as a unifying figure, urging the public to follow in his footsteps. “He was an exemplary leader who never segregated people along political differences,” Asiki said.

Arua Resident District Commissioner, Swaib Toko, remembered the late Emaga as a leader who brought the people of West Nile together and showed them the right path.

Arua Muslim District Kadhi, Sheikh Abu Jaafar Shaban, encouraged the public to emulate Haruna’s life as both a good leader and a devout Muslim.

Haruna’s body was laid to rest in Ludara Sub County, Koboko District. He is survived by four wives and 15 children.
