Parliament Demands Transparency in Umeme Transition

Parliament Demands Transparency in Umeme Transition
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has directed the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to present a detailed report on the transition from Umeme to Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), set to take effect on April 1, 2025.

The directive follows Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa’s assurance to Parliament that preparations for the transition are nearly complete, with UEGCL ready to assume nationwide power distribution.

Tayebwa stressed the need for transparency and accountability, urging the ministry to clarify how the transition will impact the public.

"We need to know what's happening and how it will affect the public," Tayebwa said.

His directive also dismissed claims that Umeme has been operating at a loss, countering concerns raised by Kalungu West MP Joseph Ssewungu.

The transition marks a major shift in Uganda’s energy sector, with UEGCL taking over power distribution from Umeme.

The government has promised a smooth handover, including retaining staff from both entities to ensure continuity in service delivery.
