Africa Tourism and Environment Initiatives (ATEI) has celebrated a historic milestone by crowning Uganda’s first-ever Miss Climate Change Awareness during a function held on International Women’s day.

Under the banner “Accelerating Women’s Involvement in Climate Action for Resilience, Livelihoods, and a Sustainable World,” the event set the tone for Uganda Water and Environment Week (UWEWK).

This groundbreaking initiative uses fashion and pageantry to put a human face on climate change. In a country where temperatures have risen up to 2°C above average and extreme weather events have increased by over 30% in the past decade, the role of women in crafting sustainable solutions is more critical than ever.

During the function, Sandra Mirembe was crowned miss climate change awareness Uganda, Prudence Jerusha( first runner-up), Sharon Natukunda(second runner-up), while Bridget Kyarikunda was crowned miss climate- green innovation, Olivia Auma miss climate water conservation and Helmy Karen Ademun as  miss climate community impact.

“This event is a major step in motivating our youth. It celebrates the strength, creativity, and leadership of young women who are essential to advancing SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 13 (Climate Action),” said Bismac Moses Amumpaire, the Team Lead at ATEI.

He noted that key collaborators included Chocolate Safaris, Uganda Wildlife Authority  and Brand Ambassadors 256.

“ATEI continues to drive change through several impactful initiatives, including enhancing climate resilience through tree-planting, engaging youth in conservation via music, recognizing sustainable tourism efforts, promoting environmental awareness through sports ,assisting reformed cattle rustlers in Karamoja and integrating climate education in schools,” Amumpaire said.

“This event is not merely a pageant—it marks the beginning of a movement towards women-led climate action and environmental sustainability in Uganda."
