University Guilds: A Stepping Stone for Uganda’s Political Future?

University guilds have long been considered breeding grounds for future political leaders in Uganda, playing a crucial role in shaping the country’s political landscape.

However, questions linger about their current effectiveness and influence, especially as the 2026 general elections approach.

Guild leadership in universities such as Makerere, Kyambogo, and Uganda Christian University has historically been a training ground for prominent politicians.

Many past student leaders have transitioned into national politics, including Members of Parliament and even presidential aspirants. The guild system provides students with firsthand experience in governance, leadership, and policy advocacy.

Despite their significance, concerns have been raised about the declining impact of guilds in shaping national discourse.

Political interference, suppression of student activism, and administrative restrictions have weakened their influence.

In recent years, some guilds have struggled with internal divisions and allegations of manipulation by national political parties, reducing their credibility as independent voices.

As Uganda gears up for the 2026 general elections, the role of university guilds remains uncertain.

While some student leaders actively engage in political discussions, others argue that guild elections have become more symbolic than functional.

The recent suspension of guild elections at some institutions over violence and malpractice further raises questions about their effectiveness.

Nevertheless, university guilds still offer a platform for young leaders to sharpen their political skills. Analysts argue that reviving their influence requires allowing greater political space within universities, fostering genuine student representation, and reducing external interference.

With a youthful population set to play a significant role in the 2026 elections, the relevance of university guilds cannot be ignored. If reformed and empowered, they could once again serve as vital institutions in Uganda’s democratic journey.
