The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) has initiated a partnership with the Chinese government focusing on communication and technology, following a high-level dinner meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zhang Lizhong.
UPPA President Samuel Ibanda Mugabi, who led a delegation from the association's executive team, described the meeting as a significant step toward collaboration and knowledge exchange.
“This partnership has the potential to drive growth, innovation, and progress in Uganda, and we're grateful for the Chinese government's willingness to engage with us,” Mugabi stated.
Discussions centered on strengthening ties between Uganda and China in the media and technology sectors, with a focus on capacity building, knowledge sharing, and potential investment in Uganda’s communication infrastructure.
The meeting highlights China’s growing involvement in Uganda’s development, particularly in key areas driving digital transformation and media expansion.
While details of specific projects remain undisclosed, Mugabi expressed optimism about the long-term benefits of the collaboration.
“We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this partnership in the years to come,” he added.
UPPA, an association representing journalists covering parliamentary affairs, plays a crucial role in shaping media discourse in Uganda.
The Chinese government has previously collaborated with various Ugandan institutions in infrastructure, education, and technology.
As discussions progress, further engagements between UPPA and the Chinese government are expected to formalize the partnership.
Ambassador Zhang Lizhong reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting UPPA members through initiatives such as Chinese language lessons, provision of computers, and benchmarking trips to China to explore advancements in communication technology.
