The Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called on women leaders in Uganda to safeguard the rights of girls, stressing the need to protect them from harmful cultural practices, early marriages, female genital mutilation, sexual violence, and school dropouts.
While opening the 2nd Women’s Parliament, Among emphasized the critical role of women leaders in promoting the welfare and safety of girls.
“Every girl, just like boys, deserves an equal chance to survive and thrive. No society should bar women and girls from receiving equal opportunities like their male counterparts,” she said.
She also commended President Yoweri Museveni for implementing economic empowerment programs that have helped improve the lives of women in Uganda, enabling greater financial independence and social well-being.
Women leaders from across the country are currently convening at Parliament to discuss pressing issues affecting Ugandan women.
The gathering provides a platform to share experiences, raise awareness about challenges, and advocate for policies that promote gender equality and empowerment.
As Speaker Among noted, “We shall work together for the betterment of this country, without segregation.”
Her remarks highlight the need for unity and collective action in advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls in Uganda.
