Police in Kabale have used tear gas to disperse protesters demanding the release of detained opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The demonstrators, comprising members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), National Unity Platform (NUP), and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), marched through Kabale town, calling for Besigye’s immediate release and an end to the alleged abduction of opposition supporters.
Led by Gideon Tumwesigye, Sheila Kyamprire, and Jessy Aine, the protesters chanted slogans such as “#FreeDrKizzaBesigye” and held placards demanding his release to access proper medical care.
However, police intercepted the demonstration, deploying tear gas and arresting three individuals—Tumwesigye, Leopold Tumwesigye, and Geoffrey Tushabe.
Kabale District Police Commander Charles Okello defended the police action, stating that the protest was unlawful since authorities had not been notified.
“The arrested individuals will face charges under the Public Order Management Act,” Okello said.
The protests come amid growing nationwide demonstrations following the circulation of images showing Besigye appearing unwell in court.
Besigye was arrested in Nairobi on November 16, 2024, and later remanded to Luzira Maximum Security Prison in Kampala.
He faces charges related to security, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and treason. His case is scheduled for mention on March 7, 2025.
