A delegation from the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF) is in Kigali, Rwanda, for a study visit aimed at enhancing Uganda’s plans to establish a National Military Museum.
The visit, which commenced on February 17 seeks to provide insights into the management and operation of military museums.
The UPDF delegation is led by Col. Nuwagira, Director of Political Education in the Air Force, and includes Lt. Col. Joseph Maruti, the National Military Museum Coordinator, and Lt. Col. Eng. Robert Chabo.
Upon arrival in Kigali, they were received by Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Shillingi, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to Rwanda, and Lt. Col. Simon Kabera, Deputy Spokesperson of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF).
As part of their itinerary, the delegation is visiting key historical sites, including the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, the National Heroes Museum, which houses the mausoleum of the late Maj. Gen. Fred Rwigyema, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
Uganda has been working towards establishing a National Military Museum at Katonga Bridge in Mpigi District, a project that began in 2020.
President Museveni, also the Commander-in-Chief, laid the foundation stone on December 20, 2020, during the launch of the 40th Tarehe Sita Anniversary.
He underscored the importance of the museum in educating Ugandans about the struggles and sacrifices that have shaped the country’s history.
The benchmarking visit to Rwanda is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that Uganda’s National Military Museum meets international standards in preserving and showcasing the nation’s military heritage.
