The academic fraternity and the nation mourn the passing of Associate Professor Nachuha Sarah Kasozi, a trailblazing scholar and former lecturer at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
She passed away on February 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in education, research, and community service.
Professor Nachuha made history as Uganda’s first Muslim woman professor, a distinction that inspired generations of young women to pursue higher education.
Her academic journey began at Fairway Primary School before she joined Tororo Girls’ School.
She later attended Makerere University and went on to earn a Ph.D. from Oxford University, specializing in biological sciences and environmental studies.
Her career in academia began in 1997 at IUIU, where she started as a part-time lecturer.
Over the years, she rose through the ranks, making significant contributions to research and higher education.
She later joined Kabale University as a Professor of Biological Sciences, where she continued to shape the scientific and environmental landscape of Uganda.
Beyond her professional achievements, Professor Nachuha was a married to Dr Mahz Kato Kasozi of IUIU’s Faculty of Management Studies with whom she had three children.
Known for her compassion and generosity, she mentored and supported many students and colleagues, leaving a lasting impact on those who crossed her path.
Her colleagues remember her as a disciplined and hardworking academic who upheld the highest professional standards.
Within her family and community, she was a pillar of strength, actively engaged in social and educational causes.
Prof Nachuha will be laid to rest in Mbarara on Monday, February 17, 2025. Her passing is a profound loss to her family, the academic community, and the nation.
