The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu, has offered his heartfelt congratulations to Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti for his election as the new Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) for the 2025-2029 term.

In a press statement released on February 15, 2025, Dr Workneh highlighted the significance of Youssouf’s election, emphasizing the crucial role he will play in advancing Africa’s collective development agenda.

"Mahamoud Ali Youssouf’s election is a resounding affirmation of the trust and confidence placed in him by African Heads of State and Government. His leadership comes at a crucial time for our continent, as we work together to advance ‘The Africa We Want,'" said Workneh.

Workneh underscored the importance of collaboration between the African Union (AU) and regional economic communities in achieving peace, stability, and prosperity across the continent.

"I look forward to collaborating closely with Mahamoud Ali Youssouf to strengthen regional stability and accelerate Africa’s integration agenda," he added.

The election of Youssouf marks a defining moment for both Djibouti and the continent, as a Member State candidate assumes the leadership of the AU Commission.

This is expected to reinforce the role of the AU as a key player in addressing Africa’s political, economic, and security challenges.

In his remarks, Workneh also expressed IGAD’s commitment to working closely with the AU under the leadership of Youssouf.

He highlighted the importance of strengthened partnerships between regional and continental institutions to ensure harmonized and coordinated efforts.

“As Chair of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Coordination Platform, I assure Mahamoud Ali Youssouf of my steadfast commitment to strengthening collaboration between the AU and the RECs,” said Workneh.

This development marks a significant step forward in Africa’s pursuit of unity, peace, and economic growth, as the continent looks to build upon the achievements of the previous leadership under the African Union’s framework.

As Djibouti takes on this important leadership role, Youssouf’s tenure is expected to usher in a new era of collaboration, with hopes for a more integrated and prosperous Africa.
