Lugazi: NUP leadership raise concern over LC1 chairpersons denying recommendation letters to members

A section of the National Unity Platform (NUP)  leadership in Lugazi Municipality has raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the ongoing voter registration process, calling for immediate action from the Electoral Commission.

The group, led by NUP Chairperson in Lugazi municipality Davis Wanyama, claims that some local village chairpersons are blocking youth from receiving the necessary recommendation letters for voter registration, which is essential for young citizens to register and participate in the upcoming elections.

The NUP’s complaints focus on the Kikawula and Nakazade parishes, areas where the party has a strong presence.

Wanyama accused the village chairpersons of withholding the letters without justification, which could potentially disenfranchise large numbers of eligible youth.

He argued that such actions are unethical and an attempt to suppress the democratic rights of young voters in the community.

“These actions not only undermine the democratic process, but also deprive youth of their right to vote,” Wanyama stated.

“It is critical that the Electoral Commission intervenes to ensure the integrity of the registration process and guarantees fair access for all citizens.”

In response to the allegations, Zam Nakazi, the Electoral Commission supervisor for Kikawula Parish, rejected the claims, stating that youth turnout has been high and no one has been denied recommendation letters.

“These accusations are completely unfounded and aim to damage the registration process. Youth in Lugazi have been coming out in large numbers to register,” Nakazi said.

As the registration period continues, the NUP is urging the Electoral Commission to investigate the situation and take appropriate action to protect the rights of voters.

Wanyama reaffirmed that the party would remain vigilant in ensuring that the youth in the area have the opportunity to fully engage in the democratic process.
