Parliament Set to Debate 180-Day Extension for Local Council Terms.
The Minister for Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has presented a general notice to Parliament, proposing a 180-day extension for the terms of Local Council (LC) One and Two leaders across the country.
The notice has been referred to the Committee on Local Government and Public Service for consideration.

According to Magyezi, the extension is necessary to ensure continuity in local governance.
The current terms of LC One and Two leaders expired and the Electoral Commission has not yet conducted elections to replace them.
The proposal has sparked debate among lawmakers, with some arguing that the extension is necessary to maintain stability in local governance. Others have expressed concerns that the extension could be seen as an attempt to delay elections.
Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa who referred the matter to the committee on Local Government and Piblic Servce has urged the committee members to debate the proposal thoroughly, considering the implications for local governance and the electoral process.
The extension, if approved, would provide a temporary solution to the governance vacuum created by the expiration of the LC leaders' terms.
However, it remains to be seen whether Parliament will approve the proposal, and what the long-term implications will be for local governance in Uganda.
