A joint security operation conducted in Kireka Railway Zone last night led to the arrest of 14 people suspected to be hardcore criminals.

The operation carried out by Police and the Army in collaboration with area local leaders targeted small bars and a video hall suspected of facilitating opium sales and use.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the intelligence-driven operation aimed to disrupt drug-related activities in the area, which are believed to be linked to crime and the terrorisation of residents in the Namugongo and Bweyogerere divisions.

“The operation was based on credible intelligence that these establishments were being used to sell and smoke opium, contributing to criminal planning and insecurity in the region,” Onyango stated.

The arrested individuals have been charged with possession of narcotics and are currently in custody awaiting court proceedings. Exhibits recovered during the raid have been presented as evidence to support the charges.

Authorities have emphasised that this operation is just the beginning of a broader crackdown on drug-related activities along the Kireka railway line.

Security agencies have vowed to maintain sustained efforts to curb opium sales and smoking in the area, with the ultimate goal of reducing crime and ensuring public safety.

Residents have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities that may compromise security.
