I have no issues with Kadaga- Museveni

If there are issues with any of my cadres, I tell them privately or in meetings. So, I have not had any issue with Rebecca Kadaga.

President Museveni has dismissed claims that he is using certain individuals to undermine former Speaker and Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga.

Museveni made the remarks on Friday during his Parish Development Model (PDM) assessment tour in the Busoga region.

Over the years, Kadaga has reportedly been at the receiving end of political brawls from some senior members of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), particularly in Busoga, with some attributing this to the "President's relationship with her".

However, Museveni clarified on Friday that he has not had any issue with Kadaga and that it is false to suggest he is orchestrating efforts to undermine her.

"People who are saying that I am sending people to undermine my sister Rebecca Kadaga are liars. For me I am a fighter. If I want to advise Kadaga, I tell her openly, not sending other people to undermine her. That is an insult to me," Museveni remarked.

The President asserted that he addresses any concerns with his party members directly, noting that if there were any issues with Kadaga, he would have discussed them with her personally.

"If there are issues with any of my cadres, I tell them privately or in meetings. So, I have not had any issue with Rebecca Kadaga." he said.

Kadaga, 68, served as Speaker of Parliament for a decade before being trounced by the late Jacob Oulanyah in 2021.

Prior to the Speakership election, rumours circulated that Museveni had asked Kadaga to step aside for Oulanyah, which she denied. This led to speculation that her refusal to comply damaged her relationship with the President.

In a cabinet reshuffle in 2021, Museveni demonstrated that he was not at odds with Kadaga by appointing her as the 1st Deputy Prime Minister, though a position six places lower in the power hierarchy.

During her swearing-in ceremony, Museveni described Kadaga as smart and flexible, and praised her for accepting a lesser position in cabinet.

“I want to congratulate my young sister Rebecca on being appointed and swearing-in as Deputy Prime Minister. I want to thank her particularly first of all, for being one of the people who rallied to the NRM quite early when it had come to government,” Museveni said.

Kadaga, who has long served in prominent roles within the NRM, including as the party's National Vice Chairperson, is recognized as Busoga's political lynchpin.

However, as the upcoming NRM primaries approach, her leadership position is under threat from her longtime nemesis, Anita Among, the Speaker of Parliament.

In November of last year, Among announced her intention to not only run for the NRM vice-chairperson position for the Eastern region but also to challenge Kadaga for the national vice-chairperson role for women, which is currently held by Kadaga.

"I'm not standing for the position of vice-chairperson, Eastern region. I'm going to stand for national vice-chairperson, Female. It is the one I'm standing for; I'm for the whole country, not only for the eastern region," Among declared.
