Deputy Speaker Orders Probe intoBesigye's Detention Conditions

Dr Kizza Besigye is facing charges of treachery in connection with his alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has directed the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights to investigate the conditions of Dr Kiiza Besigye’s detention at Luzira Prison.

This follows concerns raised by Opposition MPs, including Francis Mwijukye, Ssemujju Nganda, and Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi, about the state of Besigye's health after a frail and sickly photo of him circulated online.

"The state of Dr Besigye's health is a clear indication of the harsh conditions he is facing in prison," said Asuman Basalirwa, the MP for Bugiri Municipality.

"We need to know if there has been a policy shift regarding visits to political prisoners, particularly Dr Besigye."

In response, Tayebwa instructed the Human Rights Committee to visit Besigye at Luzira Prison on Friday and report back to Parliament on Tuesday.

"I direct the Committee on Human Rights to visit Dr. Besigye and assess the state of his rights," Tayebwa stated.

Opposition MPs welcomed the decision, calling it a step in the right direction.

"We are pleased that the Deputy Speaker has taken our concerns seriously," said an Opposition MP.

"We hope that the Committee will uncover the truth about Dr. Besigye's detention conditions and ensure that his rights are respected."

Besigye, a prominent opposition leader and former presidential candidate, was abducted from Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024, and subsequently controversially extradited.

He is facing charges of treachery in connection with his alleged involvement in a plot to overthrow the government.

He is currently on remand in Luzira Prison and has reportedly been denied visitors since his detention.

His case has sparked widespread condemnation among his supporters, who claim his arrest and treatment are politically motivated.
