The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has highlighted the historical importance of Omani traders who ventured inland from the Indian Ocean in search of the Nile's source, significantly contributing to the spread of Islam in East Africa.
Speaking during a high-profile visit by a delegation from Oman at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) headquarters on Tuesday, the Mufti underscored the enduring bonds between Uganda and Oman.
The delegation included Prince Barghash Turki Al Said, Mr. Faiz Muhammad Al Shikely, and Mr. Ali Kachope Kabalega, an attaché at the Ugandan Embassy in Oman.
Sheikh Mubaje praised the long-standing relationship between the two regions and emphasised Uganda’s reputation as a peaceful, hospitable, and investment-friendly nation.
“Uganda, known as the ‘Pearl of Africa,’ offers unmatched natural beauty, a peaceful environment, and abundant investment opportunities,” he said.
He noted that the harmonious coexistence of the country’s diverse population under the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU).
The Mufti acknowledged Omani contributions to Uganda’s Islamic development, including the recently inaugurated Masjid Madina in Bugiri Municipality on January 17, 2025.
He proposed formal cooperation between UMSC and the Omani Ministry of Islamic Affairs through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The Omani delegation expressed admiration for Uganda’s natural beauty, tropical climate, and the warm hospitality of its people.
Mr. Faiz Muhammad Al Shikely, speaking on behalf of the visitors, reflected on the historical ties between Oman and East Africa, which date back to the early 18th century.
He highlighted their visit's dual purpose: to explore business opportunities in Uganda and revive the historical cooperation that once flourished between Oman and the region.
“The Omani government has rolled out initiatives to rejuvenate the rich historical cooperation that existed for centuries between Oman and the East African people,” Mr. Faiz stated.
The Omani delegation warmly received the Mufti’s proposal and pledged to engage relevant authorities in both countries to formalize collaboration.
The meeting was attended by Sheikh Hafidh Muhammad Harunah Bukenya, the Second Deputy Mufti.
