“Dr Kizza Besigye has been given two choices, to either eat prison food or starve. All the food items we carried for him were rejected, we were told that Posho, milk, millet flour, honey, cooking oil, rice, blue band etc are sold at the prison canteen. Dr said he won't eat their canteen food, he doesn't trust it, he remarked and said probably he will starve to death and die before the date set by Muhoozi,” Nyanjura said in a post on X.
Arrested last year in Kenya together with his aide, Hajji Obeid Kamulegeya, the duo was remanded to Luzira by the General Court Martial on charges related to unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
Commenting about Besigye’s condition, the Kampala deputy Lord Mayor said the veteran opposition leader has been stopped from physically meeting his visitors and that whoever wants to speak to him does so through phone booth provided by the prison authorities.
“As if that is not enough, Dr KB isn't allowed to interact with other prisoners, he isn't even allowed to attend prayers, he is in a prison within a prison. “
Contacted for a comment on the matter, Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine dismissed the claims of restrictions.
“What they are saying is not true. We are doing our professional responsibility to manage Dr.Kizza Besigye. Their allegations are unfounded,” Baine told the Nile Post.
