The Ministry of Lands and Housing, in collaboration with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has proposed the construction of 638 houses for survivors of the Kiteezi disaster.
The proposal, which was submitted to Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja, aims to provide permanent housing for victims of the August 2024 tragedy.
In the August 2024 disaster, a garbage dump collapsed, burying homes, killing at least 32 people, and displacing dozens more while destroying valuable property.
The government plans to allocate Shs84 billion for the construction of three-bedroom houses or Shs77 billion for two-bedroom houses.
Bulwadda Estates Ltd has been tasked with building the homes on KCCA land in Ddundu.
Minister of State for Housing, Percis Namuganza, confirmed that 638 houses will be constructed. The beneficiaries will repay the cost through deductions from the value of their Kiteezi land.
Prime Minister Nabbanja advised additional consultations on the proposal, directing the Ministry and KCCA to prepare a comprehensive document for Cabinet review.
This initiative aims to provide a long-term solution for the victims while addressing the broader housing challenges in the area.
