Maintenance Works on Kampala Northern Bypass Underway to Enhance Traffic Flow

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced progress in sectional maintenance works along the old phase of the Kampala Northern Bypass, with priming activities currently ongoing at the Kisaasi section.
The contractor, Stirling, will proceed with applying an asphalt overlay before moving to other sections of the road, ensuring the bypass remains in optimal condition.
The 21-kilometer bypass, which was constructed to decongest Kampala’s city center, has played a pivotal role in easing traffic flow by providing an alternative route for vehicles traveling long distances.
It connects key highways, including Jinja Road, Hoima Road, Masaka Road, and Mubende Road, allowing long-haul vehicles to bypass the traffic-heavy city center.
Since its commissioning, the Kampala Northern Bypass has significantly reduced traffic congestion in the city. It has provided a vital link for trucks and buses traveling to and from major towns such as Jinja, Hoima, Masaka, and Mubende.
Previously, these vehicles were forced to navigate through the city’s central business district, adding to the gridlock.
Before the bypass, Kampala’s city center was chaotic, with long-distance trucks jamming the roads. Now, the bypass ensures smoother movement of goods and people across the country.
The bypass has also eased the daily commute for residents, saving time and reducing vehicle operating costs.
The current maintenance works are aimed at preserving the quality of the road and improving safety for road users. The Ministry of Works acknowledged the cooperation of the public during the sectional closures, which have minimised disruptions.
“We appreciate the patience of road users as we work to maintain the bypass. These upgrades will ensure smoother traffic flow and a longer lifespan for this vital infrastructure,” the ministry stated in an update on X formerly twitter.
The Kampala Northern Bypass is not only crucial for local traffic but also for regional trade. As a connector between Uganda’s major highways, it facilitates the movement of goods from Kenya through Jinja to western Uganda and beyond.
This has enhanced the efficiency of trade routes and strengthened Uganda’s position as a transport hub in the East African region.
With sectional maintenance ongoing and plans for further enhancements, the Kampala Northern Bypass remains a critical part of Uganda’s transport infrastructure.
As the road continues to serve as a lifeline for both domestic and regional travel, its upkeep will ensure sustained economic benefits and a better quality of life for road users.
