The State Minister of Finance, Henry Musasizi, has raised concerns over the rising poverty levels in the Kigezi sub-region, urging religious leaders to collaborate with the government in addressing this issue.

During the closure of the 2024 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Fund at Rushoroza Cathedral, Musasizi revealed that poverty in Kigezi has risen to 27%, surpassing the national average of 21%.

This increase is particularly alarming, as it marks a rise from the previously reported 24%.

Musasizi emphasized the importance of religious leaders in mobilizing and sensitizing the community on how to tackle poverty at the household level.

He urged Bishop Callist Rubaramira and other religious leaders to promote government poverty alleviation programs, which he believes can make a significant difference in the region.

"As the finance minister, I have a responsibility of preaching the gospel of poverty eradication," Musasizi said.

The minister also encouraged the congregation to look forward to electing effective leaders during the upcoming elections, who will play a crucial role in addressing the region's challenges.

The fundraising ceremony, which aimed to raise Shs. 1.5 billion for the construction of a church-owned commercial building in Kabale municipality, was seen as a positive step toward economic growth and job creation in the region.

Musasizi’s call highlights the government's commitment to combating poverty in the Kigezi sub-region, with hopes that collaboration with religious leaders will yield tangible results for the local communities.
