Over 2000 Kamwenge Residents to Access Safe, Clean Water
More than 2,000 residents of Miyora I, Miyora II, and Rwebikwato II villages in Kiyagara Sub-County, Kamwenge District, are set to benefit from a new piped water project aimed at providing safe and clean water.
The project, valued at Shs107 million, is funded by Join For Water and implemented by Joint Efforts to Save the Environment (JESE), with additional support from Kamwenge District.
For years, residents in these villages have relied on distant and often contaminated water sources shared with animals.
A local resident highlighted the daily challenges, saying, "We have been walking for hours to collect water, and the water we get is not clean. This project is going to change our lives."
George Bwambale, monitoring and evaluation advisor at Join For Water, underscored the broader environmental benefits of the project.
He stated, "The objective of this project is to protect and conserve the ecosystems, especially the Mpanga River catchment area, while ensuring that communities have access to safe water."
The District Water Officer, Agaba Asiimwe, assured residents of the project's sustainability, noting, "Once completed, the water system will be handed over to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), which will levy tariffs to ensure maintenance and sustainability."
Yonani Muheezi, secretary for works, called on the community to support the contractor for the successful completion of the project.
"We urge the community to cooperate fully with the contractor to ensure this project is completed on time and serves its purpose," he said.
Expected to be completed within six months, the project aims to alleviate the burden of fetching water and improve public health by providing reliable access to clean water.
