Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa raised the issue on the floor, questioning the absence of ministers during the solemn proceedings.
Their absence left many, including Ssenyonyi, outraged.
“This blatant disregard for protocol and respect is unacceptable,” Ssenyonyi remarked, emphasising that the government’s actions tarnished the solemn occasion meant to honour the late MP.
While eulogizing Ssegirinya, Ssenyonyi also highlighted the importance of respecting the rule of law, reflecting on the MP’s tribulations during his lifetime.
“As we send off Honourable Muhammad Ssegirinya, may we commit to respecting the rule of law because he suffered due to its disregard,” Ssenyonyi said.
He reminded the House that Ssegirinya had been granted bail only to be abducted outside Kigo Prison, an incident that underscored his struggles.
The government’s absence during the session has drawn widespread criticism, with many questioning its commitment to democratic traditions and norms.
