In a statement, the Mufti recalled Ssegirinya’s reversion to Islam, noting that the MP publicly declared the Shahada the testimony of faith in Almighty Allah and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) before the Mufti himself at the National Mosque.

Mubaje described Ssegirinya as a beloved leader whose contributions to his community and country will be deeply missed.
The Mufti expressed his sorrow over the MP’s passing, remembering him as a devout Muslim and a dedicated servant of the people.
“I offer my fervent prayers to Almighty Allah to forgive Hon. Ssegirinya’s earthly sins, elevate his good deeds, and grant him a place in His divine presence,” Mubaje stated.
He extended his condolences to Ssegirinya’s family, colleagues in Parliament, the people of Kawempe North, and the entire nation, praying for strength and patience for all those mourning the loss of the youthful legislator.
Ssegirinya passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2025, at Rubaga Hospital.
He was remembered as a passionate advocate for grassroots development and a champion for the rights of ordinary Ugandans.
Born in 1988 in Masaka District, Ssegirinya rose to prominence despite growing up in poverty. He often spoke of the struggles he faced, which fueled his passion for uplifting marginalised communities.
He began his political career as a local councilor and later won his parliamentary seat in 2021.
Known as “Mr. Update” for his active engagement with constituents on social media, Ssegirinya earned a reputation for his humility, generosity, and relentless advocacy for justice, democracy, and good governance.
However, his activism was met with harsh resistance from authorities.
In 2021, Ssegirinya was arrested alongside fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana on charges of murder and terrorism.
His time in prison, compounded by deteriorating health, contributed to his rapid decline, ultimately leading to his untimely death.
