MP Basalirwa Calls for Withdrawal of Charges Against Ssegirinya Co-Accused
Ssegirinya was in September 2021 arrested alongside Makindye West counterpart Allan Ssewanyana over murder and terrorism charges
Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa, who is also the Chairman of the Muslim Caucus in Parliament, has urged the government to consider withdrawing all charges against individuals who were accused with the late MP Muhammad Ssegirinya.

"While the law states that when someone dies, the case against them ceases, I believe it's only fair that the co-accused are also exonerated," Basalirwa said as he paid tribute to Ssegirinya.
"As one of his lawyers, I can attest that there were around seven cases against Ssegirinya and the co-accused, including Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana."
Basalirwa's call comes as the Parliament pays tribute to the late Ssegirinya, who passed away on Thursday from Lubaga Hospital.
Ssegirinya was in September 2021 arrested alongside Ssewanyana just months after the elections.
They are joined by Jackson Kanyike, John Mugerwa, Bull Wamala, and Mike Sserwadda, accused of terrorism, murder, and attempted murder in connection with the wave of machete killings that occurred in Greater Masaka two years earlier.
The legislators spent about 17 months on remand before they were finally granted bail. But the prison appears to have exerted Ssegirinya's health as he would spend most of his time since then in hospital.
