Joseph Kabuleta, the leader of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED), has described the death of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya as a reflection of Uganda’s systemic failures under President Museveni’s regime.

In a statement, Kabuleta referred to Ssegirinya’s death as both a tragedy and a travesty, emphasizing the late MP's remarkable rise from humble beginnings to national prominence.

“Not the most erudite person, but through his incredible people skills, he worked his way from the trenches to the zenith of the 11th Parliament,” Kabuleta noted.

Kabuleta lamented that Ssegirinya never fully enjoyed his tenure as a legislator, alleging that his two-year incarceration on “clearly trumped-up charges” irreparably damaged his health.

He added, “Ssegirinya’s story is the story of Museveni’s Uganda; one of hopes raised then brutally shattered.”

Ssegirinya, popularly known as “Mr. Update” for his active engagement with constituents, succumbed to health complications at Rubaga Hospital.

Rising from a local councilor to a Member of Parliament, Ssegirinya was celebrated for his grassroots activism and unwavering commitment to the marginalised, earning him the nickname “The Fighter.
