Ssegirinya was a champion for the marginalised- Ssemakadde
As we reflect on Ssegirinya's life, we must acknowledge the grave consequences of allowing politics to distort legal processes. This approach undermines the rule of law, erodes legal excellence, and leaves vulnerable individuals open to abuse

In his eulogy dated January 10, Ssemakadde said Ssegirinya was a passionate activist and defender of the marginalised.
"The Uganda Law Society mourns the
passing of Muhammad Ssegirinya, a fervent activist and champion of the marginalised," he stated.
However, Ssemakadde stated that Ssegirinya's life was tragically cut short amid legal struggles something he says highlights the "dark underbelly" of Uganda's justice system.
"As we reflect on Ssegirinya's life, we must acknowledge the grave consequences of allowing politics to distort legal processes. This approach undermines the rule of law, erodes legal excellence, and leaves vulnerable individuals open to abuse," Ssemakadde said.
He expressed the law society's commitment to restoring trust in the nation's legal institutions, ensuring the law is upheld impartially, and safeguarding individual rights.
"Let us honour Ssegirinya's legacy by striving for a more just Uganda, where the law is a shield of justice, not a tool of oppression," he added.
Ssemakadde also commended Speaker Anita Among for her support, which allowed the late legislator to retain his parliamentary seat during his health struggles.
"We thank the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Anita Among, for her compassion and understanding that allowed him to maintain his seat in Parliament, even as he battled health complications."
Ssegirinya was elected as an MP in 2021, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), with 41,197 votes, significantly ahead of his nearest competitor, Sulaiman Kidandala, who garnered 7,512 votes.
However, his term was marked by difficulties, as he spent much of it bedridden and frequently traveled abroad for treatment related to skin cancer and liver issues.
He also endured a lengthy imprisonment, spending nearly 16 months behind bars due to allegations of involvement in machete killings in Greater Masaka.
Last year, Ssegirinya expressed his determination to run for re-election in the 2026 general elections to continue his projects in the Kawempe North Constituency.
Unfortunately, his life was cut short on Thursday when he was pronounced dead at Lubaga Hospital.
Many, including prominent politicians and fans who appreciated his humorous personality, have since taken to social media to share their condolences for the late legislator.
According to the preliminary burial programme, Ssegirinya's body will be transported to Masaka on Saturday, with the burial set for Sunday.
