JEEMA blames torture for Ssegirinya’s death
We deeply mourn the passing of Hon. Ssegirinya and condemn the torture that led to his deteriorating health
The Justice Forum (JEEMA) has condemned the torture endured by Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Member of Parliament for Kawempe North, which they claim directly contributed to his untimely death.

JEEMA specifically highlighted the issue of torture, asserting that Ssegirinya’s health had rapidly declined as a result of the brutal treatment he suffered while imprisoned.
"We deeply mourn the passing of Hon. Ssegirinya and condemn the torture that led to his deteriorating health," the statement read.
The party called on Ugandans to unite in condemning torture and ensuring that those responsible for such actions are held accountable.
“Let us stand together against such heinous acts,” JEEMA urged.
Ssegirinya, known for his relentless pursuit of justice, had endured unjust imprisonment in the face of adversity, with his health declining sharply during his detention.
JEEMA’s statement noted that his passing serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for national unity, open dialogue, and a commitment to justice within Uganda’s political system.
"His unjust imprisonment and the subsequent suffering he endured serve as a painful reminder that we must act swiftly to end such injustices," said JEEMA spokesperson Dr. Swaib Kaggwa Nserereko.
The party extended condolences to Ssegirinya’s family, his constituents in Kawempe North, and the Ugandan public, calling his passing the loss of not just a leader, but a symbol of resilience and service to humanity.
JEEMA reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a fair and inclusive society, free from the scourge of torture.
The party called for Ugandans to honor Ssegirinya’s legacy by working together to build a just and united nation.
“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannah. Rest in peace, Comrade Ssegirinya.”
Ssegirinya died at the age of 37 at Rubaga Hospital, where his death was officially confirmed on Thursday.
The hospital stated that Ssegirinya passed away at 12:10 PM after a prolonged illness that saw his health deteriorate significantly over the past few months.
“With deep sorrow, Rubaga Hospital announces the passing of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Honorable Member of Parliament for Kawempe North,” a statement from the hospital read. “Despite all efforts to ensure his recovery, he passed away today at 12:10 PM.”
Born in 1988 in Masaka District, Ssegirinya rose to prominence despite growing up in poverty.
He often spoke about his struggles and the challenges he faced, which shaped his passion for uplifting the marginalised. He entered politics as a local councilor before winning his parliamentary seat in 2021.
Dubbed “Mr. Update” for his active engagement with constituents on social media, Ssegirinya became a beloved figure for his humility, generosity, and relentless advocacy for justice, democracy, and good governance.
Ssegirinya’s activism, however, was met with harsh resistance from authorities.
In 2021, he was arrested alongside fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana on charges of murder and terrorism, a period that saw his health severely affected, contributing to the rapid decline that ultimately led to his death
