Deputy Kampala Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura has called for an independent medical examination to assess the health of lawyer Eron Kiiza, who was recently detained and sentenced by the General Court Martial.

Nyanjura described the alleged torture inflicted on Kiiza by military personnel as “lethal and extreme,” revealing that during the ordeal, observers feared for his life.

“When we visited Eron in prison yesterday, he complained that the air he breathes out smells like blood. Could it be that he bled internally?” Nyanjura questioned, expressing grave concern for his health.

She emphasized that Kiiza should be receiving treatment at a well-equipped hospital instead of being confined in a maximum-security prison.

Kiiza, a prominent lawyer representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, was sentenced to nine months in Kitalya Prison last week.

His detention and alleged mistreatment have sparked outrage and renewed debates about human rights abuses and the fairness of military courts trying civilians.

On Wednesday, Nyanjura, alongside former FDC Women’s League Chairperson Ingrid Turinawe, visited Kiiza at Kitalya Maximum Prison.

Nyanjura reported that Kiiza, held as prisoner No.002/25, is in severe pain, with visible injuries and swelling allegedly caused by his detention. His ribs, waist, and neck are bruised, and his left ear is swollen.

Kiiza told his visitors that he was brutally assaulted in detention cells at the Court Martial, leaving him gasping for breath.

“We thank God he is alive,” Nyanjura said, adding that they are praying for him to receive a medical evaluation by a private, independent, and trusted team.

Despite the alarming reports, Nyanjura acknowledged the collective support from colleagues and activists during her visit.

“On a positive note, we found a plethora of lawyers and environmental activists checking on him. This solidarity is encouraging,” she wrote on her X account.

Kiiza, a vocal critic of government policies he deems harmful to the environment and human rights, has garnered widespread support from civil society groups and legal practitioners, who are demanding transparency in his case and guarantees for his safety while in custody.
