Lukwago blames state negligence for Ssegirinya's death
Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has held the state accountable for the death of Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away at Rubaga Hospital.

Ssegirinya, widely known for his relentless advocacy for the underprivileged, succumbed to health complications that Lukwago attributed to systemic failures in providing adequate medical care during his detention.

In an emotional statement, Lukwago paid tribute to Ssegirinya’s resilience, saying, “He fought for his people, his country, and for justice. He was the true definition of a fighter.”

Lukwago criticised the judiciary for neglecting Ssegirinya’s health needs, accusing authorities of denying him timely access to medical treatment and bail despite repeated pleas.

He stated, “Life is paramount. Those facing trial must have access to medical facilities of their choice to safeguard their health while undergoing legal processes.”

Ssegirinya, who had been battling multiple health conditions, was reportedly undergoing surgery and other treatments.

Lukwago lamented that the justice system ignored documented evidence of his deteriorating health, leading to his premature death.

“We appealed to the courts for his release on medical grounds, but our cries fell on deaf ears. This insensitivity underscores a broader issue within the justice system—a failure to balance prosecution with humanity,” he emphasized.

Rising from a local councilor to a Member of Parliament, Ssegirinya was celebrated for his grassroots activism and unwavering commitment to the marginalised, earning him the nickname “The Fighter.”

Lukwago highlighted his legacy of dedication to his constituents despite immense personal and professional challenges.

As tributes pour in from across the nation, Lukwago called for urgent reforms to prevent similar tragedies.

He urged the government to prioritize the health and rights of all individuals, particularly those in custody, to uphold the principles of justice and humanity.
