Leaders in Mubende District, together with locals, have united in urging the NRM government to reward Mubende with a university in recognition of its significant role in liberating Uganda.

The first bullet of the liberation struggle was fired in Mubende District at Kabamba Barracks during the NRA rebels’ attack, marking the beginning of their efforts to overthrow the Obote regime.

According to Godfrey Tushabe, a resident of Kassambya Constituency, where Kabamba Barracks is located, the NRM government should leave a historical mark in Mubende to honor its role in the liberation.

“We thank the NRM government for remembering Mubende and bringing Liberation Day celebrations here because the first bullet was fired in our district. However, we request the government to leave a liberation mark in Mubende so that people can recognise its importance as the place where the NRA began its efforts,” said Tushabe.

“While we appreciate some benefits, such as hospitals, they are not enough. Let us have something significant in Mubende as compensation,” he added.

Other locals expressed concerns about the poor state of the Lusalira-Nkonge-Ssembabule Road, the main route to Kabamba Barracks, and called on the government to tarmac it. “We are celebrating Liberation Day, but the road leading to the barracks is dusty. We request the government to address this because the dust is unbearable,” said the locals.

According to William Museveni Ndori, the Member of Parliament for Buwekula South Constituency, Mubende deserves a university as a reward from the NRM. “Even if we don’t request much on that day, asking the president to grant us a university would be enough because Mubende is a historical place, as you all know,” said Ndori.

He added that a university would bring significant opportunities and address unemployment in the region. “If our request is granted, we will achieve much.

Our children currently travel to Kampala for studies, and many educated individuals are unemployed. A university would provide jobs for both literate and illiterate people,” he said.

The NRM Liberation Day celebration is the first of its kind to be hosted in Mubende since 1986, when the NRA/NRM government took over power.
