Centenary Group's state-of-the-art Green Data Centre to drive digital transformation
The construction of Centenary Group's state-of-the-art Tier 3 Green Data Centre in Masaka is progressing as planned, with operations scheduled to commence in the third quarter of 2025.
The project, spearheaded by Centenary Technology Services (Cente-Tech), is poised to play a key role in Uganda's digital transformation efforts.
During a recent site inspection, Centenary Group Chairman Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu, accompanied by executives from both Centenary Group and Cente-Tech, reviewed the project's progress.
With civil works nearing completion, attention is now focused on the technical installation phase.
"This data centre embodies our promise of equitable social and economic transformation for all Ugandans," Prof. Ddumba-Ssentamu said.
He emphasised the importance of local content, with several Masaka-based enterprises playing a critical role in supplying construction materials and support services.
The project is designed to foster both immediate and long-term benefits for the local community while strengthening the country's digital infrastructure.
The Green Data Centre aligns with Uganda's Digital Transformation Roadmap for 2023-2028, focusing on objectives such as improved digital infrastructure, data sovereignty, and the development of integrated digital services.
Centenary Group's investment demonstrates its commitment to supporting national development goals through strategic infrastructure initiatives.
Brenda Magoba, Centenary Group’s Company Secretary, highlighted the robust compliance framework that ensures high standards in risk management and environmental protection.
"We have implemented data protection measures exceeding international standards," she said.
She added that the facility’s design includes advanced biometric access controls, 24/7 surveillance, and environmental monitoring systems to safeguard data and the environment.
Peter Kahiigi, Chief Technology Officer at Cente-Tech, explained that the facility will serve as a key point of presence for telecommunications companies and support critical national infrastructure projects, such as the East African Oil Pipeline.
As a Tier 3 facility, it will offer 99.982% availability, with multiple power sources, cooling systems, and network connections ensuring reliable service.
In addition to its technical capabilities, the data centre will incorporate green design elements, including energy-efficient cooling systems, solar power integration, and sustainable water management practices.
This environmentally conscious approach sets a new standard for digital infrastructure development in the region.
The facility is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting Uganda's growing digital economy.
By providing secure and reliable data hosting solutions, the data centre will enable businesses to leverage cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies while maintaining data sovereignty and security.
"This data centre is just one example of our commitment to building sustainable, future-ready infrastructure that supports Uganda's digital transformation journey," said Kahiigi.
