Nyendo-Mukungwe Member of Parliament Mathias Mpuuga has criticized the National Unity Platform (NUP) for losing control of the political agenda, asserting that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is now setting the pace.

NUP is led by Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

"NUP doesn’t have the ball. The ball is with the NRM. That’s where I am taking the fight," Mpuuga said during his appearance on NBS Morning Breeze on Monday.

Mpuuga expressed concerns about the opposition’s effectiveness, describing it as fragmented and lacking the unity needed to challenge the NRM.

"I don’t think my friends at Kavule are interested in alternative policies. I don’t think they are aware that the opposition is stuck and that the opposition needs unity," he said.

He called for a united front among opposition leaders to present a cohesive strategy, emphasising that collective effort is essential for progress.

"The opposition will not wait for a donation of civic space. The opposition must make demands, and these demands must go to the people so that they contribute to those demands too. The opposition must, of necessity, sit under a big tree or big tent and speak to each other," Mpuuga added.

Signaling a shift in approach, Mpuuga declared his commitment to a "new day and a new way of doing things," emphasising the need for fresh strategies in the political landscape.

"I am not an angry man, but I am a man who moves with conviction. I have a duty to self, a duty to the country, and an obligation to my colleagues where I think the collective has not been achieved," he stated.

Reflecting on his time with the NUP, Mpuuga highlighted his contributions to the party’s development.

"My legacy in NUP is there for several to see. I invested my energy, resources, and capabilities to improve the outlook of the ragtag organization," he said.

Mpuuga also reiterated his focus on empowering grassroots movements and youth, referencing his recent collaboration with local musician Alien Skin as part of his efforts to nurture young talent and bring organisation to fragmented groups.

As part of his preparations for the 2026 general elections, Mpuuga officially launched the Democratic Alliance (DA) on December 6.

He positioned the DA as a civic platform that will eventually transition into an electoral entity.

"In a few months, we are consulting; it will be an electoral platform," Mpuuga announced.

He emphasised that the DA aims to offer a political home for all Ugandans, particularly the youth seeking a fresh approach to governance.
