LoP Betty Aol: "Arrested MPs should be released unconditionally"

By | August 24, 2018

The Leader of Opposition, Betty Aol Ochan has called for the immediate release of all MPs arrested after the Arua fracas.

Addressing journalists at Parliament Ochan, flanked by other opposition MPs, also said that the parliamentary committees on Defence and Human Rights should summon Brig Don Nabaasa, the commander of SFC and Gen David Muhoozi, the army chief to explain the army's hand in the brutal arrests of the MPs.

"They should come and explain why they were at the forefront of beating up the MPs. Was it their role to arrest the MPs," Ochan fumed.

The legislators demanded that the deputy speaker, Jacob Oulanyah, apologises to the House for giving contradictory statement about the state of health of the tortured legislators.

After visiting MPs Francis Zaake and Robert Kyagulanyi, Oulanyah said they were in deep pain and poor health but on the floor of parliament later that day, he said the MPs' condition was not as dire as had been speculated.

Information from parliament indicates that the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has already written a letter indicating Parliament’s readiness to fund the treatment abroad of Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP.
