The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has directed the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a comprehensive statement regarding the arrest of four-time presidential candidate, Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, in Nairobi, Kenya.

This directive follows a statement by Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, who condemned the alleged illegality and criminality involved in Besigye’s arrest.

Ssemujju argued that the laws of both Kenya and Uganda were not followed before Besigye’s extradition.

“The arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye was an illegal abduction, and we should condemn it,” Ssemujju said. “We should also ask the Government of Kenya to explain whether they still respect the protocols of the East African Community.”

However, Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua cautioned that it would be premature for Parliament to condemn the actions of Kenya before a court ruling is given, as the matter is already before court.

Despite this, Speaker Anita Among emphasised the need for transparency and accountability. “I direct the Ministers of Internal Affairs and Foreign Affairs to present a detailed statement regarding the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye,” she said. “This statement should be presented without going into the merits of the case.”
