The East African Community is intensifying efforts to make smartphones and laptops more affordable, with the aim of enabling every citizen to harness technology in their daily lives.

This push was highlighted at the 3rd National ICT Job Fair 2024, a key event aimed at fostering innovation, skills development, and employment within the sector.

Speaking at the fair, Uganda's Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, announced the government’s plans to reduce taxes on imported smartphones and laptops.

He further emphasized that the government is prioritizing the development of local manufacturing plants for smart devices and working on lowering internet costs to enhance access to digital tools across the nation.

“We are working to ensure that every citizen can afford a smartphone or other smart devices by supporting local manufacturing and reducing internet costs,” Dr Baryomunsi stated.

The event, which was officially opened by Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja, underscored the government’s commitment to integrating technology into all aspects of life.

Nabbanja encouraged the youth to take advantage of the fair to showcase their skills, secure job opportunities, and contribute to the rapidly growing ICT sector.

“The government is keen on empowering the youth through platforms like this, which foster innovation and provide employment opportunities,” Nabbanja said.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Amina Zawedde, highlighted that this year’s fair is expected to create jobs for over 1,000 youths in the ICT sector.

She noted that initiatives like this are vital for narrowing the employment gap and advancing Uganda’s technological landscape.

Currently, the ICT sector employs around 1.2 million Ugandans, according to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.

The government’s focus on improving technology affordability and job creation aligns with its broader vision of ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital revolution, particularly those in rural areas.

The two-day ICT Job Fair 2024 serves as a valuable platform for young innovators, entrepreneurs, and job seekers to connect with potential employers and showcase their talents, furthering Uganda's aspirations for a tech-driven future.
