Former Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) combatants have been warned to uphold peace and lawful behavior as they reintegrate into society.

Nathan Twine, the principal legal officer of the Amnesty Commission, cautioned the group that any return to criminal activity would result in severe consequences.

“We expect you to behave well when you return to your communities. If you engage in any illegal acts, the law will take its course,” Mr Twine stated during a reintegration ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

The event marked the completion of a three-month rehabilitation program for the fourth cohort of ex-combatants at the Mbuya Center for Community Organization.

The group, comprising 25 individuals—20 Ugandans and 5 Congolese—received training in practical skills such as sewing, mechanics, painting, and baking.

They also benefitted from psycho-social education, medical care, and spiritual counseling provided by the Bridge Way Foundation.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ahmed, a former ADF fighter, commended the Ugandan government and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their efforts in restoring peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Thank you for showing us kindness and helping us. The skills we’ve gained here will transform our lives and help us move forward,” he remarked.

The Amnesty Commission, established under the Amnesty Act of 2000, continues to focus on rehabilitation, reconciliation, and fostering a peaceful Uganda.

Representatives from the Bridge Way Foundation pledged to offer additional support for the ex-combatants for at least a year after their reintegration into their families.

The ceremony was attended by senior UPDF officers, including Col Deo Akiiki, Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, members of the Bridge Way Foundation, and officials from the Amnesty Commission.

This initiative underscores Uganda’s commitment to peacebuilding and offering a second chance to individuals willing to contribute positively to their communities while holding them accountable for their actions.
