Six years ago, Patrick Ssenyonjo, popularly known as Fresh Kid, began his studies at Kampala Parents' School after gaining fame as a singer at just seven years old.

This young boy, who made waves in the music industry, has earned admiration for his humility, curiosity, good manners, and resilience – traits that have supported his success both in music and academics.

After completing his Primary Seven exams, Jamirah Mulindwa Nuwaha reflected on Ssenyonjo’s journey, which has taken him from humble beginnings in Kawanda to recognition among children, dignitaries, and royals in Kampala.

At age 7 in 2019, Fresh Kid’s stage name became a household name in Uganda. His rise to fame started in Kizito Zone, Luweero District, under Francis Kamoga of De-Texas Management, who brought him to the limelight.

From Kawanda to Kampala, Fresh Kid’s fame spread through concert appearances and media features. His impactful lyrics left the country captivated, with public figures like Betty Nakibuuka and Buganda’s Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, expressing their views on his career. Former State Minister for Youth and Children, Florence Nakiwala, also commented, urging caution in managing his young career.

These public conversations led to Fresh Kid securing a place at one of Kampala's prestigious schools. On May 23, 2019, he joined Kampala Parents' School, marking the start of his academic journey.

Fresh Kid recalls his first day," “There was a lot of excitement; many kids and parents were excited to see me. At one point, the attention became overwhelming.”

Despite being a young celebrity, Fresh Kid worked hard, and soon his classmates grew comfortable interacting with him. “At school, I am Patrick Ssenyonjo,” he says. “I’m just a pupil like everyone else.”

Teachers Mary Nakitende and Jessica Nakayenga, who guided him through his studies, remember the initial excitement. “On his first day, everyone wanted to see him,” recalls Nakayenga with a smile. “It took time for everyone to see him as a part of the school.”

Nakitende shares, “He was bright but only spoke Luganda, so we helped translate and encouraged his peers to interact with him. That’s how he improved.”

Determined, Ssenyonjo avoided distractions, focusing on education and staying out of trouble. “He was disciplined and focused,” says Nakitende. “He’d say, ‘Teacher, I can’t get involved – I don’t want to lose my scholarship.’”

Balancing school and music, Fresh Kid continued creating popular songs like “Olugendo lw’eggulu,” “Sibiriimu Tubakuba Kipepeo,” and “Fear None,” establishing his name further.

His producer, Fred Kabajjo (14K-Bwongo), considers Fresh Kid like a younger brother. “He’s impacted the Ugandan music industry positively, and I’m recognized for being part of his journey,” says 14K-Bwongo.

Before recording, 14K-Bwongo explains the lyrics’ meanings to Fresh Kid, ensuring he understands the message. “For example, in ‘Bambi,’ he was singing about DJ Arch and Emmanuella. I had to explain who they were.”

Known for his affectionate and curious nature, Fresh Kid’s journey from a young singer to a student is inspiring. After six years at Kampala Parents' School, he recently completed his Primary Seven exams, with fans hoping for his success.

With exams over, Fresh Kid is now looking forward to his next chapter in music. “I have a concert called the ‘Primary Leaving Experience’ this December,” he says. 14K-Bwongo adds, “I have new work ready for him, but I’ll wait for his guardians' permission.”

As Fresh Kid, also known as Patrick Ssenyonjo, awaits his exam results, he prepares for the next phase of his life, balancing the challenges of fame and his education.
