Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Harunah Bukenya, the newly appointed Second Deputy Mufti of Uganda, has officially assumed office.

In a brief handover ceremony held at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) headquarters, Sheikh Bukenya received the instruments of power, marking the beginning of his tenure.

The event, attended by senior UMSC officials, was overseen by Sheikh Imran Abdnoor Ssali, Secretary for Religious Affairs, who affirmed the council’s commitment to supporting Sheikh Bukenya in his new role.

Sheikh Bukenya's official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for early next year, where he is expected to outline his vision and priorities for Uganda’s Muslim community.

His appointment is seen as a key step in bolstering religious leadership within the UMSC, with a focus on fostering unity and addressing the needs of Muslims across the country.

Recently, the UMSC announced Sheikh Bukenya as the new Second Deputy Mufti of Uganda.

The decision, made public by the Director of Shariah at UMSC Old Kampala, was witnessed by Mufti Shaban Mubajje.

Sheikh Bukenya replaces Sheikh Abdallah Ssemambo, who was suspended last year following a petition endorsed by 15 members of the UMSC National Executive Committee.
