NRM MPs Urged to Support Rationalisation Bills as Parliament Resumes

The Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua has reminded all NRM MPs to support the rationalisation of agencies as resolved by the NRM Caucus, ahead of Parliament's consideration of the RAPEX Bills tomorrow.

In a communique, Obua stated, "On Tuesday 22nd, the House will commence at 10am sharp to consider Rationalisation Bills as resolved/agreed in Cabinet/Caucus. Our physical presence and support are required."

Several bills are lined up for consideration, including the Cotton Development Amendment Bill 2024, National Agricultural Advisory Services Amendment Bill 2024, the National Forestry and Tree Planting Amendment Bill 2024 and National Tribunal Bill 2024.

The others are the National Arbitration and Conciliation Amendment Bill 2024, Uganda Road Fund Amendment Bill 2024 and the Uganda National Roads Authority Amendment Bill 2024 among others.

These bills aim to streamline government agencies and public expenditure, as part of President Museveni's strategic plan to reduce administrative costs and optimize resource allocation.

The rationalisation process is expected to save the government around Shs1 trillion annually.

The move has, however, faced opposition, with some MPs questioning the financial implications of abolishing or merging agencies.

The Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee previously halted the consideration of rationalisation bills due to concerns over the Certificate of Financial Implication issued by the Ministry of Finance .

As Parliament resumes tomorrow, the NRM MPs' support will be crucial in passing these bills. Will they heed Obua's call and support the rationalisation agenda? Only time will tell.
