OPM Delivers 900 Iron Sheets to Jinja City Schools
Jinja Mayor Peter Kasolo expressed gratitude for the timely intervention by the Office of the Prime Minister, noting that many schools in the city have been grappling with outdated and hazardous asbestos roofing.
Jinja City has received a consignment of 900 iron sheets from the Office of the Prime Minister, aimed at revitalizing several dilapidated schools within the city.
The donation followed a formal request made by the Jinja City leadership to address the pressing infrastructure needs of its educational institutions.
The iron sheets, delivered on 11th October, were handed over to Edward Lwanga, the Town Clerk of Jinja City.
A delivery letter from the Office of the Prime Minister instructed Mr Lwanga to closely monitor the allocation process to ensure the materials are used for their intended purpose in revamping school buildings.
The benefiting schools include Narambhai Road Primary School, which will receive 200 iron sheets, Jinja Army Primary School with 100, Main Street Primary School with 450, and Walukuba West Primary School with 150.
Jinja Mayor Peter Kasolo expressed gratitude for the timely intervention by the Office of the Prime Minister, noting that many schools in the city have been grappling with outdated and hazardous asbestos roofing.
"We thank the Office of the Prime Minister for honoring our request because most of the old school buildings have condemned asbestos, which experts say is hazardous to human health," Kasolo said.
"This is a great relief to the traditional schools whose rooftops were on the verge of collapse."
Kasolo reassured the public that the iron sheets would be distributed fairly, in line with the specified quantities for each school.
"Given the history of iron sheets in Uganda, we will ensure that each school receives the exact figure as provided by the Office of the Prime Minister," he emphasized.
He added that the city leadership is committed to improving the education sector, highlighting other ongoing projects.
"We have secured two Seed Schools for construction at Jinja Railway Grounds in Loko Village, and an additional classroom block for Masese Seed School," Kasolo said.
This delivery comes on the heels of efforts by various stakeholders in Jinja to address the infrastructural challenges facing schools.
Earlier this year, alumni of Main Street Primary School organized a fundraising marathon to support roofing their former school, which has produced notable figures such as businessman Sudhir Ruparelia.
The initiative is expected to significantly improve learning environments across Jinja City, contributing to better educational outcomes for pupils in the region.
