The fire, suspected to have been started by a woman smoking fish, erupted unexpectedly in the bustling landing site, catching residents off guard as they carried out their daily routines.

A wildfire tore through Ssese Island’s major landing site, Lutoboka Landing Site, in Kalangala District on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction that has displaced approximately 260 people and destroyed more than 40 homes.

The fire, suspected to have been started by a woman smoking fish, erupted unexpectedly in the bustling landing site, catching residents off guard as they carried out their daily routines.

The aftermath has left the community devastated, with many residents pondering their next steps after losing not only their homes but also personal belongings.

Locals expressed deep concern over the impact of the fire, which reduced the once-thriving area to ashes.

According to local leader Sunday Kigozi, the swift dismantling of nearby wooden structures prevented the fire from spreading further.

"What saved the remaining communities was the breaking of other wooden structures at the landing site to ensure the fire didn’t spread. We must ask our planning team to allow us to construct permanent houses that may not easily be spoilt by such a fire,” Kigozi stated.

Authorities, including the Police Marine Unit, the Scene of Crime Officer, and district officials, swiftly responded to the disaster.

Assistant RDC Henry Lubulwa highlighted the urgent need for firefighting resources in the area.

“We must work towards providing firefighting equipment because if we had any, we would have been able to save the properties of our people,” Lubulwa emphasized.

In the wake of the fire, the Uganda Red Cross Society, led by Kalangala Branch Manager Sylvester Ssemugenyi, has partnered with the district administration to provide temporary relief to affected families.

Efforts are underway to ensure that those left homeless receive support during this difficult time.

Kalangala Mayor Vicky Victoria Bratton pointed out the importance of developing a physical plan for the town council, stressing that it is crucial for the safety and security of the community.

She noted that such measures would help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
