Mpuuga's Electoral Reforms at Stake as some Opposition MPs Demand Consultation

A group of opposition legislators, including Ronald Balimwezo of Nakawa East, Paul Luttamaguzi Ssemakula, and Derick Nyeko of Makindye East, have urged former Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga to consult the Shadow Cabinet before tabling the long-awaited electoral reforms in Parliament.

Mpuuga's plan to table three bills on electoral reforms this week has raised concerns among opposition legislators who feel left out of the process.

"We need comprehensive electoral reforms, not unilateral decisions," Balimwezo emphasized. "Mpuuga's failure to involve the Opposition would be a significant betrayal."

The legislators acknowledge that some of Mpuuga's proposed amendments, such as: Restoration and Entrenchment of Presidential Term Limits, Change of Mode of Election for Women Members of Parliament, Reduction in the Size of Members of Parliament and Establishment of the Upper House in Parliament among others are beneficial but stress the need to incorporate other opposition proposals to ensure comprehensive reforms.

As part of the Shadow Cabinet, they argue that they are not privy to the proposed amendments and demand endorsement before proceeding.
