Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has praised Joe Biden’s decision to bow out of the 2024 presidential race following his underwhelming debate performance against Donald Trump earlier this year.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Clinton said Biden’s decision to step aside was the right move after his inability to recover from the televised face-off.

"Once that debate happened, he could not recover, and he did the right thing," Clinton said, referring to Biden’s faltering moments that many believe were pivotal in shaping public perception.

Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump in a shock result, also commented on the Democratic Party’s ongoing struggle to connect with Trump's voter base.

She pointed out that the party has failed to communicate effectively what they are doing to address the economic anxieties of Trump supporters.

Her remarks come just weeks before the November election, which will see Democratic candidate Kamala Harris face off against Trump in a race that polls show to be highly competitive.

With Harris taking the lead for the Democrats, the election is poised to be one of the most contentious in recent U.S. political history.

Background of Clinton’s Remarks

Clinton’s endorsement of Biden’s withdrawal signals a shift in Democratic strategy as they pivot to Harris, a former senator and vice president, who has promised to continue Biden’s policies while offering a fresh perspective.

Trump, who is seeking re-election after his surprise victory in 2016, has continued to command loyalty from a large portion of the Republican base, despite a series of controversies and legal challenges.

However, the race remains tight, with polls indicating no clear frontrunner.

As the election approaches, Clinton’s remarks underscore the ongoing challenge for the Democratic Party to secure support from working-class Americans, many of whom feel left behind by the nation’s political elite.
